Chapter 8

Angels fear to tread… Meeting the

crew… The lights go out… I try

new things…

“Well. I see you’ve had some personal nursing.”

I managed to open my eyes. It felt as if I’d only just fallen asleep. “What time is it?”

“It’s after lunch.” Melanie’s contemptuous gaze swept over my pajamas on the floor. “The rest of this lot is still asleep too. Did you enjoy their little show?”

I clutched the covers around my naked body as I crimsoned, recalling the show I had very much enjoyed the night before. I didn’t remember Portia leaving, but she obviously had. “They woke me up in the middle of the night. Not that it’s any business of yours.”

“You’re right, it’s not my business. You do whatever you like. But the next time you faint dead away at my feet, I will not be spending the next three days making sure you don’t die.”

She was gone in a sparkle of red hair before I could take in that she looked very trim in a sweater and slacks that fit her.

Bloody hell, to quote Portia. For heaven’s sake, whose castle was this, anyway? I was nearly an heiress, and given the way real rich people and so-called nobility behaved these days, a private, consensual tryst was tame. How dare Melanie judge me, even if my behavior last night shocked me a little bit too? I’d walked in on a really hot sex scene, no matter how staged, and a girl has needs. I was an adult, wasn’t I?

I felt less self-righteous when I spotted the bowl of soup on the writing desk, and saw that my dishes of last night had been taken away. She’d obviously seen the note on my bedside table, reading in hard-to-miss lettering, “It was a pleasure to bite you last night. I hope you wake this morning having enjoyed pleasant dreams as a result.”

It was signed with a stylish “P.” The wording would be ambiguous except for my sleepwear scattered on the floor. Melanie was a bright elf. She knew how many beans made five. She had spent a couple of days taking care of me and then I’d gone and potentially exhausted myself. But I felt so much better this morning — sex was good medicine. Right, Melanie would want to hear all about that theory.

It took a while, but I managed another shower, ate the soup, and was pleased I had to use the bathroom in the normal course of things. That was progress. I found clean jeans, but they were my last pair in that condition, which begged the question of what happened with laundry in a castle that didn’t even have a phone.

My three-quarter sleeve pullovers, which served me well in the chilly Berkeley summers, would keep me warm here, if I were near a roaring fire and wrapped in two blankets. Though I knew I wouldn’t have
